The year 2007 saw Lydia joined by a talented group of musicians and the group launched the independent EP ‘Hibiscus January’ to a full house at the East Brunswick Club in October. Lydia’s song ‘Please’, which was co-written with Tim O’Donnell, is featured on Hollywood label 272 Records’ compilation CD ‘Acoustika Vol 8’ and was released globally in January 2008. Lydia’s debut LP is due for release early 2009.

Lydia grew up in Melbourne, Australia surrounded by music. She has studied classical piano since the age of five and played flute and acoustic guitar through her teens, using guitar to write her first original songs. She teamed up with guitarist Tim O’Donnell in the late ‘90s which began an exciting relationship performing and writing music together.

Since beginning her solo performances with residencies in Port Fairy, Western Victoria as a 17-year old, Lydia has played at music festivals, jazz clubs, bars and country races. She performed solo in the USA in 2005.

‘She packs them in!’ - Manchester Lane entertainment guide

‘Hibiscus January’ is enjoying regular airplay on community radio and has been celebrated as ‘the best release by a local artist in a long time’ – Clear Springs Entertainment.

From the reflective ballad ‘Hibiscus January’ and folk-inspired love song ‘Time Somewhere to the emotionally-charged rock song ‘Please’, Hibiscus January showcases a true diversity in sound that is rare among emerging artists. Each track’s lyrics carry a depth that distinguishes Lydia Phillips from most contemporary songwriters and makes the listening experience all the more satisfying.

“Lyrics are incredibly important to me, because it’s the meaning in a song that often unites the room,” Lydia says. “It’s hard to feel strongly about a song that doesn’t really say anything. These songs were written at different stages and different ages, but they’re hopefully connected by an expressiveness that will unite and ignite people.”

And ignite they do. Lydia’s cascading voice can stir or silence the room and 2008 has already seen her land gigs playing with widely-acclaimed artists including roots/folk duo The Yearlings and QLD songstress Emma Dean. Watch out as the year unfolds with many new sounds!
